Active participation of the CESS in the proceedings of the EPATHLA conference

18-Dec-2025 With a substantive and institutionally strong presence, the Committee of Ethics and Safeguarding in Sport (CESS) participated in the review conference of the National Platform for Sports Integrity (EPATHLA), which was held in the Press Room of the OAKA Olympic Complex, in the presence of representatives from all sports and institutional bodies.
CESS was represented by its President, Stefanos Skordis, Vice President Efthymios Efthymiou, and members Nikolas Koursaris and Nikolas Konstantinou, confirming the Committee’s active role in promoting sports integrity and in strengthening cross-border cooperation between Greece and Cyprus.
The conference focused on the review of EPATHLA’s actions for 2025, as well as on the planning of initiatives for 2026. Under the guidance of the Secretary General for Sports, Giorgos Mavrotas, EPATHLA constitutes Greece’s central national mechanism for the prevention, detection, and response to the manipulation of sports competitions.
A greeting address was delivered by the Deputy Minister of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, Giannis Vroutsis, who emphasized that the Ministry is continuously strengthening its efforts to combat match manipulation, drawing on both the national institutional framework and international experience.
In his presentation, Mr. Mavrotas highlighted the multi-layered nature of the phenomenon and presented indicative data for 2025, concerning the number and type of reports, cooperation with international organizations, and cases forwarded for further criminal and disciplinary investigation.
Within the framework of interventions by institutional bodies, particular importance was attached to the remarks of the President of CESS, Stefanos Skordis, who described EPATHLA as a “model of information and awareness-raising” regarding the phenomenon of manipulated matches, emphasizing the value of prevention and education.
As a sign of appreciation for the close and substantive cooperation between Greece and Cyprus in the field of sports integrity, Mr. Skordis presented an honorary plaque to the President of EPATHLA, Giorgos Mavrotas, recognizing his contribution to strengthening the joint strategy to address the phenomenon. In addition, during the event, CESS honored the legend of Greek basketball, Panagiotis Giannakis, for his great contribution to sport.
The conference was complemented by interventions from representatives of institutional, judicial, law-enforcement, and international organizations, with emphasis on international cooperation, education, and the protection of athletes, and concluded with interactive activities that enhanced participation and understanding of EPATHLA’s work.
EPATHLA continues with reinforced planning for 2026, investing in prevention, education, and the systematic exchange of information, with the aim of safeguarding the credibility and integrity of Greek sport. The presence of the Cypriot delegation at the conference constitutes yet another example of the close and exemplary cooperation aimed at strengthening the fight against negative phenomena in sport and consolidating sports integrity.
